WhatsOnStage Awards: 11 nomination a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child [ENGLISH VERSION]

L’ottava storia del maghetto di J. K. Rowling detiene il monopolio di candidature ai premi teatrali assegnati dal pubblico che saranno consegnati il prossimo 19 febbraio a Londra.

Ancora pochi giorni per votare il migliore spettacolo londinese. Gli spettatori avranno tempo fino al 31 gennaio per scegliere i loro interpreti preferiti ai 17esimi WhatsOnStage Awards, gli unici riconoscimenti teatrali in cui a decidere è il pubblico.
Equivalenti teatrali dei People’s Choice Awards per cinema e televisione, i premi verranno consegnati il prossimo 19 febbraio al Prince of Wales Theatre durante l’Annual Concert aperto al pubblico.
A guidare le nomination – anche queste scelte dagli spettatori nei mesi scorsi – con ben undici candidature è Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, l’opera che racconta l’ottava storia del mago di J. K. Rowling a diciannove anni dalla conclusione della saga di romanzi.
Lo spettacolo in scena al Palace Theatre di Londra è candidato nella categoria Best New Play, avendo debuttato lo scorso giugno, e in quella più che meritata per la Miglior Regia a John Tiffany.
Inoltre, Jamie Parker, che interpreta Harry Potter, è in lizza per Best Actor in a Play. L’attore dovrà vedersela con altri nomi illustri per portare a casa il premio che l’anno scorso fu assegnato a Benedict Cumberbatch: Kenneth Branagh per The Entertainer, Joseph Fiennes per Richard III, Ian Hallard per The Boys in the Band e Ian McKellen per No Man’s Land.
Anche nella categoria Supporting, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child domina con quattro nomination totali: Paul Thornley (Ron Weasley) e Anthony Boyle (Scorpius Malfoy) per Best Supporting Actor in a Play e Noma Dumezweni (Hermione Granger) e Poppy Miller (Ginny Weasley) per Best Supporting Actress in a Play.
Molti, poi, i premi tecnici che potrebbero essere assegnati allo spettacolo: Migliori Costumi a Katrina Lindsay, Miglior Scenografia a Christine Jones e, infine, Best Lightning Design e Best Video Design, rispettivamente a Neil Austin e a Finn Ross e Ash Woodward.
Vista l’affluenza senza precedenti per Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – l’ultima tranche di biglietti disponibili online per il periodo febbraio-aprile 2018 ha fatto sold out in poche ore – è difficile intravedere una reale concorrenza nelle categorie in cui la play è nominata.
Di fatto, il fandom del maghetto è numericamente superiore all’audience di un qualsiasi altro spettacolo e ciò rischia di creare un monopolio, poco importa se chi vota abbia o meno visto l’opera. Al momento, infatti, pur potendo esprimere una sola preferenza per categoria in base all’indirizzo IP, non sembrano esserci strumenti che permettano di votare soltanto a coloro che sono realmente stati a teatro, come, ad esempio, utilizzare il codice del biglietto.
Ciononostante, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child meriterebbe la vittoria in almeno alcune delle categorie in cui è nominato. I nostri pronostici? Best New Play, Best Direction e Best Set Design sono assicurati. Le altre nomination qui. Staremo a vedere.

The eighth episode of J. K. Rowling’s boy wizard has the monopoly of nominations for theater awards given by the public in schedule next February 19th in London.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Few days left to vote for the best London theatrical production. Theatregoers have time until 31 January to choose their favourites for the 17th WhatsOnStage Awards, the only major theatrical awards voted by the audience.
The theatrical equivalent of what People’s Choice Awards are to cinema and television, the awards will be given the next 19 February at the Prince of Wales Theatre during the Annual Concert open to the public.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child leads the nominations. The play focusing on the eighth story about J.K. Rowling’s wizard, set nineteen years after the conclusion of the saga, has eleven nominations.
The play debuted last June at the Palace Theatre and is nominated for Best New Play and for Best Direction to John Tiffany.
Moreover, Jamie Parker, who plays Harry Potter, is among the nominees for Best Actor in a Play. The actor will have to deal with other prestigious names to get his hands on the award Benedict Cumberbatch won last year: Kenneth Branagh for The Entertainer, Joseph Fiennes for Richard III, Ian Hallard for The Boys in the Band and Ian McKellen for No Man’s Land.

It is definitely hard to see any fair competition here as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has smashed the box office – the last ticket release for February-April 2018 sold out in a few hours.
In effect, the wizard’s fandom outnumbers the audience of any other play and that risks to create a monopoly, no matter if the voters have seen the play or not. Apparently, there is no way to prevent those who have not seen the play to vote, such as using the barcode number on the ticket.
Nonetheless, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child deserves to win in at least some of the categories in which it is nominated. Our predictions? Best New Play, Best Direction and Best Set Design are guaranteed. Full list of nominations here. Let’s wait and see.
