Il Globe Theatre presenta la stagione dell’amore [ENGLISH VERSION]

Diretta ancora da Emma Rice, direttore artistico uscente, la nuova stagione estiva sarà all’insegna del sentimento per eccellenza con otto diversi spettacoli.

The show must go on, lo spettacolo deve continuare. Il Globe Theatre, il famoso teatro di Shakespeare sulle rive del Tamigi, presenta il nuovo cartellone.
La notizia arriva dopo l’annuncio delle non troppo inaspettate dimissioni di Emma Rice, direttore artistico in carica appena dal 2016. Tuttavia, la regista lascerà il Globe soltanto a metà 2018 e, intanto, ha maldestramente messo a tacere le voci sui motivi della sua ritirata, presentando la nuova stagione estiva.
Summer of Love, questo il titolo e il tema della proposta del teatro shakespeariano. Un chiaro omaggio a mezzo secolo di distanza da quel 1967 che ha segnato l’estate d’amore hippie per eccellenza, nonché anno di nascita della stessa Rice.
Via libera alle grandi storie d’amore del Bardo riadattate: si comincia sabato 22 aprile con Romeo e Giulietta di Daniel Kramer, in scena fino al 9 luglio. L’adattamento vedrà nel ruolo di Mercuzio una donna, Golda Rosheuvel.
Debutta giovedì 18 maggio La dodicesima notte, diretto proprio da Emma Rice. La play resta al Globe fino al 5 agosto e include tra i protagonisti la drag performer Le Gateau Chocolat nella parte del giullare Feste.
Ancora, Molto rumore per nulla si sposterà dalla Sicilia al Messico della rivoluzione del primo Novecento. Lo spettacolo accompagnerà gli spettatori dal 15 luglio fino al 14 ottobre, per la regia di Matthew Dunster.

Nell Gwynn

Poco più di una settimana, dal 2 al 13 maggio, per assistere alla storia di Nell Gwynn, tra le primi attrici della Restaurazione nonché amante di Carlo II. L’opera di Jessica Swale è ambientata al Drury Lane, famoso teatro del 1660.
L’ultima play shakespeariana in scena sarà Re Lear, dal 10 agosto al 14 ottobre. La regia è affidata a Nancy Meckler, mentre ancora non si conosce l’attore che vestirà i panni del protagonista.
A conclusione della stagione, verrà presentato Boudica, l’unico inedito del cartellone, scritto da Tristan Bernays e ispirato alle vicende dell’omonima regina celtica.
Sarà la stagione dell’amore, dunque, ma anche quella del cambiamento, nello stile di Emma Rice. Il direttore artistico uscente, infatti, si è contraddistinto per aver apportato notevoli modifiche a quel canone che il Globe custodisce così gelosamente.
In effetti, luci e microfoni sono spuntati laddove per secoli ci si è affidati soltanto all’illuminazione naturale – caratteristica del Globe le repliche pomeridiane e le suggestive midnight matinees “a cielo aperto” – e al diaframma dell artisti che si sono avvicendati sulle tavole.
Una decisione azzardata che farebbe rivoltare il Bardo nella tomba e che potrebbe essere stato il motivo del congedo anticipato di Emma Rice. Perché se esiste un posto dove l’innovazione deve obbligatoriamente cedere il passo alla tradizione, quello è il Globe. Non resta che aspettare la bella stagione per avere la prova definitiva dell’insuccesso di tale esperimento o per ricredersi. Staremo a vedere.

Emma Rice introduces the new summer season. On stage eight different plays about love.

Globe Theatre

The show must go on. After artistic director Emma Rice’s not-so-sudden resignation, Shakespeare’s Globe has announced its new summer season. Rice was appointed only last year. Nonetheless, she said she would leave the Globe only in 2018 and presented the new season in a clumsy attempt to silence the polemics around her decision.
Summer of Love is the title and theme of the new season. It will be a clear tribute to the hippie summer of love of 1967, the year in which Rice herself was born.
Green light to several adaptation of the big love stories written by Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet directed by Daniel Kramer opens on the 22nd of April and closes on the 9th of July. The role of Mercutio will be played by a woman, Golda Rosheuvel.
The Twelfth Night, the only play directed by Rice, will debut on the 18th of May and will be on stage until the 5th of August. Amongs the protagonists, drag performer Le Gateau Chocolat as Feste the jester.
Much Ado About Nothing will be set in 1900s Mexico during the revolution. Directed by Matthew Dunster, the play will be on stage from the 15th of July to the 14th of October.

Romeo and Juliet

Nell Gwynn, the story of one of the first actresses of the Restoration, will be on for one week only (2nd-13th of May). The play by Jessica Swale is set in the famous Drury Lane Theatre in 1660.
The last Shakespearian play will be King Lear (10th of August-14th of October). It will be directed by Nancy Meckler, while the actor who is going to play the title role is to be announced.
At the end of the season, the unreleased Boudica, written by Tristan Bernays, will stage the story of the homonymous Celtic queen.
The season of love and change, according to Emma Rice. The outgoing artistic director has deeply modified those standards the Globe is so proud of.
In fact, artificial lighting and microphones have been used for the very first time, after centuries of natural light – both during the matinees and the suggestive midnight shows – and lung capacity.
A risky choice that would make the Bard roll in his grave and could be the reason of Rice’s dismissal. The Globe is one of the only places on Earth where innovation often surrenders to tradition, and for a very good reason. We’ll see whether the fair season of love is the final proof of the failure of such a modern experiment.
